Salvatore “Sam” A. Fortese, 60, Dunmore, died Thursday morning from complications from leukemia. He and his wife the former Eileen McKenna had celebrated their 33rd Wedding anniversary on June 30th.

Raised in Dunmore, he was the son of Grace Prizzi Fortese of Dunmore and the late James Fortese. Sam was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Dunmore and was a member of the Dunmore Central Catholic High School Class of 1970 and the University of Scranton Class of 1974. He was employed as a Controller with the Lackawanna County Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse.

Sam enjoyed hosting parties and cooking for friends and family. He had a great sense of humor, was very friendly and outgoing. He battled his disease with strength and determination. He was a loving husband, son, father, brother, uncle and friend that will be missed more than words can express.

His family would like to thank friends and extended family for all the support thru his courageous battle with cancer. They are especially thankful for the care he received from the doctors, nurses, and staff at Temple Jeanes Hospital in Philadelphia.

Also surviving are a daughter Brittany Fortese, Philadelphia, a son Ryan Fortese and his wife Rose, Philadelphia, a sister, Julie Abel and her husband David, Scranton, two brothers, James and Anthony Fortese, both of Dunmore, a mother-in-law, Pauline McKenna, Dunmore, a brother-in-law, John McKenna and his wife Kim, Jessup, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a father-in-law John McKenna.

The funeral will be Monday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc. 318 East Drinker Street in Dunmore with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am in St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Chestnut Street in Dunmore. Interment to follow in the Dunmore Cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday from 3-6pm.

Dear Mrs. Fortese, Ryan, Brittany, and Family,
Words can't express how deeply sorry I am for your loss. Mr. Fortese was always like a second father to me and I was blessed to have known him so closely. He will truly be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. Although this time is incredibly difficult, the strength, bravery and unity you have all shown through the past couple days, months and years is beyond inspiring. I will always hold and cherish the memories of Mr. Fortese in my heart. Please know that I am here for you if you need anything at all, now or down the road. I love you all.

Words cannot express the sadness we feel.. You will be missed everyday. You always made us comfortable and part of your family. We cherished your friendship and the good times we spent together. Eileen, Ryan and Brittany will always be part of our family. We love you Sam. Be at Peace.
