John Francis Gastinger Jr., 63, of Dunmore, died Saturday morning in the Regional Hospital of Scranton.
Born in Scranton, son of the former Evelyn Macinsky, with whom he resided and was her caregiver, and the late John F. Gastinger Sr., he was a 1969 graduate of St. Paul's High School, Scranton, and received an associate degree in avionics technology from the Community College of the Air Force in 1984. He was an Air Force veteran, and was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for his time served. Before his death, he worked as an electronics mechanic at Tobyhanna Army Depot.
He loved spending time camping at the Finger Lakes, and was a Philadelphia Eagles fan. He was an avid bowler and a member of the American Legion and the Dunmore Booster Club. He had a passion for music and military aircraft, particularly the FB-111, which he worked on during his time in the military. He enjoyed going to concerts with his best friend of 40 years, Frank Hennigan. He was a proud supporter of the military, but his proudest moment was the birth of his granddaughter, Guinevere Franceschelli.
Surviving are a daughter, Heidi Franceschelli and husband, John IV, Farmington, Minn.; a son, John Jacob Gastinger, Scranton; a granddaughter, Guinevere Franceschelli, Farmington; sisters, Ann Eggert and husband, Ernest, Jermyn; Mary Reggie and husband, Joseph, Throop; Joan Loyek and husband, William; and Laura Deluccie and husband, Nicholas, all of Dunmore; brothers, Paul Gastinger, Scranton; and William Gastinger and companion, Melissa, Old Forge; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Taylor Avenue and East Gibson Street, Scranton. Inurnment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
There are no public calling hours.
