George Macko, 99, of Dunmore passed away Thursday, March 22, at the Dunmore Health Care Center, Dunmore.

Born in Taylor on January 26, 1919 and lived in the area all his life.  He was the son of Peter and Anna Matsko.  He was the youngest of his family and preceded  in death by his loving wife Mary (Pirritano) Macko of Dunmore, brothers Andrew Macko, Michael Matsko,  sisters , Mary Pillotti, Ann Sohns, Susan Sillner and Elizabeth Puhalski.

George honorably served in Europe during WWII in the U.S. Army. Upon returning from the war, went to work in his brother-in-law’s auto repair shop.  Ultimately, he started his own shop - George’s Carburetor which he ran until his retirement in 1974 . George was always active and loved sports.  He was a long time member of Elmhurst Country Club and played golf into his 90’s.  George didn’t mind reminding people he scored several holes-in-one over the years. He loved to fish, bowl, and was a loyal Cardinals  fan.  George was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Dunmore and belonged to the VFW Post 3474 Dunmore.

He is survived by his loving daughter Ann Spinka (Pete Oster), and son George Macko (Kathleen). Grandfather to Jennifer Patton, Julie Parsons (Darrell), David Macko (Erin) and Christopher Macko.  Great grandfather of Jack (16), Nicholas (14) and William Patton (10), Daniella (9) and Kendall (7) Parsons, and Hazel (9) and George Macko (7) all of California.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

George Macko was a special man who will be warmly remembered by the many, many family and friends who knew him during his long life.

Our family extends gratitude to Diane Sillner, many friends, and neighbors who helped care for George and lent a helping hand over the years. Special thanks to all the caring nurses and staff at Dunmore Nursing Home and Hospice of the Sacred Heart.

There will be a private family burial, at St. Catherine’s Cemetery.  A celebration of Life will be announced at a later date and all friends are welcome.
