Francis A. Burne, Sr., 92, of the Green Ridge section of Scranton passed over peacefully at home on Friday morning. He was preceded in death by his wife the former Catherine “Kitty” Gilday who at the age of thirty was stricken ill which made Fran a stronger partner in the raising of their four small children. Kitty passed away on October 25, 1977. The couple had been married for 35 years.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late James R. and Florence Burne and was a 1939 graduate of Central High School. He was a member of St. Paul’s Church, Scranton and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was the owner –operator with his brother Richard “Dick” Burne of the family owned Burne
automobile franchises for more than sixty years and was a star member of the Oldsmobile Salesmaker Club.
Fran had a warm affectionate smile and had a great love for his nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was fondly named“Poppi Cookie” by his great-granddaughter Keira for the sweet treats he would always have for the children to their delight. Wanting little for himself he was a giving father who never wanted a “thank you” in return. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
The family wishes to thank Hospice of the Sacred Heart and all of his care givers especially Patti, Posie, Denise, Gina, Karen and Sandy for all of their care, compassion and overwhelming support during Fran’s illness.
Surviving are children; Francis A., Jr. and wife Santa M., Christine Burne Riggi and husband Joseph N. and Michael G. and wife Mary Pat, all of Dunmore and R.J. and wife Kathleen, Clarks Summit.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Michelle Burne and sisters; Mary Burne and Elizabeth “Betty” Burne Gibbons and brothers; Bart E., James P. and Richard N. Burne.
The funeral will be Monday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St. Dunmore with Mass at 9:30am in St.Paul’s Church, Penn Ave., Scranton.
Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton
Friends may call Sunday from 2-4pm
