Seth Gross Obituary

Seth S. Gross, a native son of Scranton, lately of Philadelphia, PA, passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at home, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Gross graduated from Scranton Central High School and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. After attending the College of Insurance, he worked for Chubb and Son in New York City before returning to Scranton to join his parents, Abe and Lillian, and his uncle, Bernard Gross, in Gross-Brown Associated Agencies, Inc. Gross-Brown later merged with Chamberlain Insurance. He was a past president of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters and taught classes for the CPCU designation.

Mr. Gross’s dedication to community service spanned his lifetime. Early on, he was an Eagle Scout, and later he served as president of the Scranton Lions Club, the Lackawanna Audubon Society, Jewish Federation of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Jewish Family Service of Lackawanna County, Junior Achievement of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Temple Israel of Scranton and the Scranton Jewish Community Center. He continued to serve on the boards of many of those organizations and served on the boards of the Scranton Hebrew Day School and on the United Way allocations panel. He also volunteered with the Pennsylvania Film Festival/Scranton Tomorrow Committee and the First Night Celebration in Scranton. He received the B’nai Brith Man of the Year Award in 2007.

Mr. Gross is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sheryl Gross; his daughters Rachel Gross (H.P. Baker) and Shoshana Gross (Sandy Bodzin); his grandchildren Adin (Miriam), Avi (Chana), and Elle, as well as three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will take place on Friday morning, July 31st at 10:00 am at Temple Israel in Scranton with burial to follow at Temple Israel cemetery in Dunmore. The family will receive visitors before the funeral beginning at 9:00 am at the Temple. For those unable to attend the services for Seth, the funeral may be viewed via livestream at www.scrantonfilms.com/livestream.

Shiva will be observed from 1- 3 PM at Temple Israel and in Philadelphia through minyan on Thursday morning, August 6th.
