John F. Murphy Obituary

Beloved John Murphy, 87, of Dunmore, died peacefully June 10 at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore. John was born July 29, 1934, in Dickson City, to his parents, the late John Aloysius and Ruth Edwards Murphy.

He was husband to his loving wife Jeanne Marie (Conway), who survives him. He is also survived by daughters, Jeanne Rolen, Glenmoore, (husband Andy) and Maureen Murphy King, Dunmore. John was "Poppy" to his grandkids, Emily (husband Peter Moyer), Austin, Texas, and Tucker Rolen, Philadelphia, and Molly, Colin, Maeve (currently working in Uruguay), Brigid and Quinn King, Dunmore. He has been joyfully reunited with his son, John Francis Murphy Jr., after 34 years.

John was a pillar of faith and kindness to all who knew him, and especially to his seven grandchildren, whom he adored for more than 30 years. He is also survived by son-in-law, Chris King, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

John and his wife Jean married in 1958, and would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary next month. Those who met John knew how devoted he was to his wife, and how special their marriage was.

He was an active member of his church community, always dressed to the nines and right on time for Mass at St. Mary's in Dunmore. He was a member of the 109th Infantry Regiment in Scranton. He was a true jack-of-all-trades: a pianist, craftsman, woodworker, singer in a barbershop quartet and handyman. A graduate of the University of Scranton, John was a high school English teacher and vice principal for more than 30 years in the Scranton School District. John was an instant friend to all, and could delight a room of strangers with his storytelling and devilish smile.

In addition to his parents and son, John is preceded in death by his brother, Cornelius, and brother-in-law, Leo Conway and his wife, Jane.

We miss you already, Poppy. Say hello to Johnny for us.

John's family would like to recognize the special care given by Dr. Ken Sebastianelli and staff, and the staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore.
