Herbert Smith, 68, South Abington Township, died Friday evening at Geisinger-Community Medical Center in Scranton after a short battle with cancer. His wife is the former Abigail M. Yarmis.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Murray and Muriel L. “Moonie” Stone Smith, he was a graduate of Scranton Central High School Class of 1972 and went on to study at former Keystone College and University of Scranton where he obtained his bachelor’s degree. Herb had many accomplishments to his name and faced several hurdles in life, but he will above all be remembered for his true love of family whom he cherished more than anything. They were his life, and he was equally as adored by them.
In addition to his wife, Herb is survived by his children, Andrew Michael Smith and wife Shannon Marie, and their son Pierce Jacob, of West Chester, and daughter Ellen Fern Smith and boyfriend Peter Wallace of Philadelphia; his sister Helene Smith Hughes and husband Thomas J. of Scranton; his honorary brother Michael Rottman and wife Anne of Bloomfield, MI; as well as his grandcats Sesame and Tuna.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Fern Ellen Smith Tepper, founder of the Rap House, now currently known as the Community Intervention Center.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with services by Rabbi Daniel Swartz. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service in the funeral home.
Interment to follow in the Dalton Jewish Cemetery.

Shiva will be observed at the family residence on Monday evening from 5-7 p.m.; and Tuesday and Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m.
