George J. Kocsis

George J. Kocsis, 95, Dunmore, died peacefully Saturday afternoon in Regional Hospital of Scranton. He and his wife, the former Joan Ratti, celebrated 58 years of marriage on August 29, 2022.

Born in Dunmore, son of the late John and Johanna Cherveney Kocsis, he was a graduate of Dunmore High School and the University of Scranton. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Dunmore where he served on their finance committee.

George began his career at Weyerhaeuser Timber Engineering before developing his own business, Wood Construction Systems, which he ran for over 37 years, and specialized in church interiors, schools and worked on The Bronx Botanical Gardens in New York. George was still actively involved with his company until the time of his death.

George lived a beautiful life, always surrounded by his family and friends. For 35 years, he loved walking Lake Scranton with his group and visiting Chick’s Diner together. He enjoyed working as a master gardener and traveling, especially to Salzburg, Austria. “Uncle George” was a mentor, trusted confidant and father figure to many. He will always be kept in our hearts as one we loved and will never forget.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sisters-in-law, Natalie Kocsis of Throop, and Theresa Kocis of Dunmore, his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews as well as numerous friends, including his lifetime walking buddy Sylvia Sands.

He was also preceded in death by his sisters, infant Mary, Anna Bellarosa, Margaret Mary Kocsis Pawloski and Catherine Sturek, and his brothers John, Joseph, Stephen, Edward and Frank Kocsis.

The funeral will be Saturday with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, 322 Chestnut St., Dunmore. Entombment, St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow.

Family and friends may pay their respects at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of mass.
