Eugene A. “Gene” Simonetti, 97, Bunker Hill Section of Dunmore, died Friday evening in the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center in Scranton. His late wife was the former Elvira Versarge.
Born in Dunmore, he was the son of the late Paul and Maria Simonetti, was a lifelong member of SS. Anthony & Rocco Parish and was a graduate of Dunmore High School. Gene served honorably in the U.S. Army in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign during WWII. Prior to retirement he was employed at Joseph The Furrier in Scranton.
His family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at both Lackawanna Healthcare and Gino J. Merli Veterans Center for the care, support, and compassion shown to Gene and to them.
Surviving are two sons, Paul, Dunmore and Leo and his wife Betty, Olyphant, three grandsons, Leo Eugene Simonetti, Scranton, Dr. Paul D. Simonetti and his wife Kelly, Maryland, and Justin Simonetti and his wife Jen, Olyphant, five great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Gina Simonetti, eight sisters, Florence, Vera, Dora, Josephine, Elizabeth, Yolanda, Marie, and Rena, and three brothers, Nello, Peter, and Paul.
The funeral will be Wednesday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc. 318 East Drinker Street in Dunmore with Mass of Christian Burial at 11AM in St. Rocco’s Church, Kurtz Street in Dunmore. Interment to take place in St. John’s Cemetery in Jessup.
Friends may call Tuesday in the funeral home from 5PM-7PM.
