Susanna "Sue" Hanis Papa of Dunmore died Friday morning at home. Her husband of 60 years, the late John F. Papa, died June 11, 2006.

Born and raised in Dunmore, daughter of the late Michael and Helen Boldruchak Hanis, she attended Dunmore public schools and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish. She was a member of the former All Saints Church and its Christian Mothers Society and gave many hours to numerous church activities, in addition to volunteering in the cafeteria of Dunmore Central Catholic High School. In her earlier years, Sue worked as a waitress for the Blue Lantern Restaurant. She later went on to work as a seamstress throughout the local garment industry at the Grove Silk Mill, at the Double Woven Glove Factory as a thumb inserter and at a pants factory, where she was the zipper inserter for the manufacture of sailor pants. She then became a mother, and devoted the rest of her life to her family as a homemaker.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law, sister, aunt, great-aunt and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was the light of our lives and center of our love. She had endless love for everyone, especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to spending time with her family, Sue liked shopping and dining out, enjoyed flowers and all animals, particularly reindeer. 

Surviving are daughters, Susanne Rose and husband, Harold, Scranton; Mary Cantafio and husband, Anthony, Jefferson Twp., and formerly of Dunmore; son-in-law, Peter Igoe, Dunmore; eight grandchildren, Thomas Rose and wife, Colleen, Clarks Summit; David Rose, Scranton; Tara Strulic and husband, Ronald, Scranton; James M. Igoe and wife, Chris Ann, Scranton; Kathleen Snyder and husband, Jeffrey, Clarks Summit; Lt. Commander Peter Igoe (USCG) and wife, Kortney, presently stationed in Elizabeth City, N.C.; James Cantafio and wife, Justine, Scranton; and Lt. Commander Anthony Cantafio (USN), presently stationed in Washington, DC; eight great-grandchildren, Joshua Rose, Lauren Rose, John Rose, Andrew Rose, Amanda Haley Igoe, Emily Snyder, P.J. Igoe and Charlie Igoe; a brother, Nicholas Hanis, Elmhurst Twp.; a sister, Irene Smith, Dickson City; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen Igoe; sisters, Mary Thomas, Ann Nole and Helen Turonis; and brothers, Charles, Michael, John, George, Peter and Joseph Hanis.

The funeral will be Tuesday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Chestnut Street, Dunmore. Interment to follow in All Saints Cemetery, Hollisterville.

Friends may call Monday from 4 to 7 p.m.
