Rochelle Spizer, age 76, a resident of Clarks Green, passed away on Oct. 20, from a long-standing illness diagnosed in March 2009.
Rochelle, daughter of the late Saul and Rita Einstein Baiderman, leaves behind her loving husband, attorney Howard Spizer; two children, Beth Packel and son-in-law, Benjamin Long, and grandson, Ryan Packel, age 14; and Gregory Spizer and daughter-in-law, Nina Spizer, and twin granddaughters, Alexandra and Jordan Spizer, age 14; a sister, Karen Chaskin and husband, Barry Chaskin, Hazleton; an aunt, Hannah Rockman and husband, Leonard Rockman, Tolleson, Ariz.; along with nieces, nephews and cousins; and many friends who knew her well.
Through the course of her illness, Rochelle demonstrated exemplary courage and inspiration to all who knew her for continuing to battle the effects of her illness. She devoted during her 49-year marriage to maintaining a warm, hospitable home where she raised two children, entertaining family and friends with all her well-known cooking achievements, especially on various holidays.
Rochelle was a graduate of Scranton Central High School, class of 1960, and a graduate of Fashion Institute of Technology, New York City. She worked as a buyer at B. Altman and Co. and Bonwit Teller. She was an active participant in local theatre with Standing Room Only Players, involved with not only the productions, but as the lead singer. She loved following Broadway shows and music, attending numerous Broadway productions in New York City and was a regular season ticket-holder for Broadway Theatre League of Northeastern Pennsylvania. She enjoyed the shows, the music and the dancing. Whenever traveling, the Broadway station on XM Sirius Radio was always on in the car.
She was a member of Glen Oak Country Club, past co-president of Temple Israel Sisterhood, a member of Temple Israel, Hadassah, Jewish Community Center as a benefactor member, and was a past member of the Lackawanna County Blind Association, participating as a volunteer at Helen Keller Day, and a volunteer with SCOLA. She was an active volunteer in numerous fundraising events for the American Cancer Societyand other charities. Her generosity to not only her family, but to acquaintances, was well known, having given away numerous personal items to people who had been kind and caring to her. She will long be remembered for her devotion to family, friends, and for her fortitude in fighting her illness, which included numerous doctors' visits and hospitalizations.
Rochelle's family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Progressive Care Unit at GCMC; her caregivers, Lois, Diane and Melissa; the staff at Elan Gardens, Mountain View Care Center and Allied Hospice for the care and comfort they provided.
In Rochelle's memory, donations may be made to the Ben Spizer Memorial Fund at the Scranton Jewish Community Center, 601 Jefferson Ave., Scranton, PA 18510; or any other charity of the donor's choice. Funeral services are scheduled for today, Monday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, PA 18512, by Rabbi Moshe Saks and Cantor Vladimir Aronzon.
The family will receive friends today at the funeral home from noon until the time of service.
Shiva will be observed at Elan Gardens, 465 Venard Road, Clarks Summit, this evening from 7 to 9, and Tuesday Through Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
