Raymond W. Morris, Sr., 87, Scranton, died Friday evening in Riverside Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. His wife the former Margaret Bloss died in 2009.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Walter R. and Mary Evans Morris. He was a graduate of Scranton High School Class of 1949 and its championship baseball team. He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force in Japan during the Korean War. He was a member of the Tachakawa AFB 1953 Northern Japan Fast Pitch Softball Championship Team. For Ray there was only one kind of dog and that was a beagle. He had them all his life and his two favorite were Diana’s Dusty and Pepper his daily companion after Peg died. He was an umpire for 35 years for Little League and Teener League and was a PIAA Baseball Umpire for 25 years.

Prior to retirement Ray worked for the Bureau of Employment Security for 35 years his last 13 years as Supervisor of the Veteran’s Unit. He also worked for Memorial Burial Vault part time and after retirement from the state he worked for the vault company full and part time for over 40 years.

Surviving are a son, Bruce and his wife Ann Marie, Old Forge, a granddaughter Diana Martinelli and her husband Michael, Old Forge, a grandson, Brian, Cleveland, OH, and a cousin Linda Owen, and her husband Donald, Factoryville. 

He was preceded in death by a son Raymond “Skip” Morris, Jr.

A funeral service will be held Monday evening at 8PM in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc. 318 East Drinker Street in Dunmore. Friends may call from 6PM-8PM. Interment will take place Tuesday morning privately in the Marcy Cemetery in Duryea.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter 967 Griffin Pond Road South Abington Twp. PA 18411.

My sincere condolences to Raymond’s family. I am deeply saddened by your loss. Please know his smile & kind words brightened my days on his visits to Northeastern Eye. What a special man! May peace replace your heartache & memories be your greatest treasures.
