Monica J. Girod, 72, of Dunmore, died Thursday evening at Commonwealth Hospice Impatient Unit at Regional Hospital of Scranton following a 42 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Anthony W. and Monica Abbey Maffullo and was educated in Dunmore Public Schools from which she graduated in 1958. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the former Columbia Union College in 1962. She taught in schools in Harrisburg, Pa., Prince George’s County, Maryland and Masontown, Pa. Upon returning to the Dunmore area, she worked locally as a substitute teacher. She also worked at B.J. Smith Furniture and Sears. She was a receptionist and switchboard operator at the former Haddon Craftsmen Book Manufacturing Company until her retirement in 1995.

In spite of her 42 years that Multiple Sclerosis slowly robbed her of her physical capabilities, she had a fantastic sense of humor, a very quick wit and a great enthusiasm for life and the people she met on her journey through her life.

She is survived by her beloved daughter; M. Joy Korea and her husband David and their children, Justin, Aiden and Evan, Hamlin. A sister and caregiver, MaryAnn Maffullo, Dunmore. Close cousins and their families, including  Michael Zelenski who provided her daytime care with love and good humor and her many good friends.

She was preceded in death by a brother; Michael Anthony Maffullo, also her caregiver until his death in 2008.

The funeral will be Monday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore with a service at 11:00am conducted by Pastor Thomas Cusack in the funeral home.

Interment, Maplewood Evangelical Cemetery, Maplewood.

Memorial contributions may be made to the M.S. Society Central PA Chapter, 2040 Linglestown Rd., Harrisburg, Pa 17110

I am very sorry to hear of Monica's death. I was a freind of Michael in the Army in 1966-1967 while we were stationed at Fort Meade, MD. I met Monica when she lived in that area. Mike was a great guy and Monica had a great sense of humor. Please let me know if I have the right Michael and Monica Maffullo. My condolences to the family. I am really sadded by reading about their passing.

I was so sorry to hear about Monica's passing. She was a wonderful person. I have many great memories of her from Haddon. She was a loving caring person with a sense of humor that brightened everyone's day. She had a long tough road with MS. May she rest in peace.
