Michael H. Freund

Dunmore, PA September 30, 1944 ~ September 6, 2018 Date of Service: September 10, 2018

Michael H. Freund, 73, Dunmore, died Thursday evening at home. He and his wife, the former Frances A. DeFranco, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past June 16.

Born in Orange, N.J., son of the late Henry and Ellen Conlon Freund, he was a graduate of Essex Catholic High School in New Jersey and Seton Hall University. A member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War, Mike developed a program at Walter Reed Hospital to aid wounded service personnel and their families; eventually, he was asked to direct the hospital's outpatient clinic. Following his military service, Mike enrolled in the first class of Marywood University's newly established school of social work, serving as the first graduate research assistant. Upon receiving his degree, he was asked to create the undergraduate social work program at Marywood and become its first director. In 2000, fellow faculty members, who frequently elected him to various committees, named him as CASE Professor of the Year. After nearly three decades of pioneering service, the Freund Presidential Scholarship was named in his honor as the embodiment of undergraduate social work at the university. He was also a member of the board of directors at Catholic Social Services as well as the Lackawanna County Child Abuse Advisory Board.

Mike's activities had broad range, from dedication to countless social service agencies, to coaching Dunmore youth sports junior leagues. He always showed great joy when being directly involved with helping people. Teaching was a massive part of Mike's world, but, above all, his family was his greatest love. He was thoroughly dedicated to his wife, children and, namely, grandchildren. He enjoyed going to the movies, walking and was an avid fan of Notre Dame football. He will be profoundly missed by all those who had the pleasure of being able to call him professor, associate, husband, father, grandfather and friend.

The family would like to thank Dr. William Heim, Dr. Justine Metcho, Dr. Ellianne Nasser, Dr. Pranjal Boruah and Dr. Giovanni Ramos for all of their dedicated care.

In addition to his wife, Frances, he is survived by three daughters, Beth Schmidt of Dunmore; Katie Tullio and husband, Jonathan, also of Dunmore; and Jennifer Freund-Toomey and husband, Christopher, of Scranton; a son, Michael A. Freund and wife, Marielle, of Olyphant; five grandchildren, Joey and Danny Schmidt, Nicholas and Alyson Tullio and Michael H. Freund II; a brother, Jerome Freund and wife Roseanne, of Whitehouse, N.J.; and nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Monday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass of Christian Burial at noon in St. Paul's Church, 1510 Penn Ave., Scranton. Interment to follow in Dunmore Cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m.

Contributions in Mike's memory may be made to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Drive, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702; or to Catholic Social Services, 409 Olive St., Scranton, PA 18509.
