Mary J. Scavone, 92, of Elmhurst Township and formerly of Scranton, died late Sunday in St. Mary’s Villa Nursing Home where she had resided. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years, the late Rolland “Ronnie” Scavone, who died August 10, 2010.
Born in Scranton, daughter of the late James and Anna Salmon Lavelle, she was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Scranton. Mary and her husband, Ronnie, were the founders and owners of Scavone Wholesale Florist in Scranton and were longtime members of the WFFSA, the Wholesale Florist & Florists Supplier Association, in addition to numerous other professional, civic and religious organizations. Mary had a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother, and this past Mother’s Day, she was given the privilege of presenting the floral wreath for the May Crowning service held at St. Mary’s Villa, which she considered this to be the greatest honor of her life. Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and good friend to many. She touched countless lives through her endless generosity and kindness.
The family would like to thank the nurses, aides, and staff of St. Mary’s Villa for their compassionate and loving care. She truly loved her caregivers, and they became loving friends.
Surviving is her daughter, Gracemary Carter and husband Thomas of Scranton; grandsons Attorney Thomas Carter of Providence, RI; and Michael Carter and fiancée Christine Morell of Portsmouth, NH; a brother-in-law, John McGoff of Allentown; nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, John, James and William Lavelle; and a sister, Ann McGoff.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with mass at 1 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 801 Taylor Ave., Scranton. Interment to follow in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
Friends may call Wednesday at the funeral home from 4-7 p.m.
