Lenore P. Arena, 94, of Scranton, died Tuesday evening in Gardens of Greenridge, Scranton. Her husband, the late Victor P., died January 5, 2010. The couple had been married for 67 years.
Born in Dunmore, she was the daughter of the late Edward W. and Christine Ettinger Setzer and was a graduate of Dunmore High School’s Class of 1940. She attended the Powell Business School, Scranton and then relocated to Washington, DC, where she worked for the War Department and met her husband to be. The couple returned to Dunmore to start their family.
She was a former member of St. Rocco’s Church and its Altar and Rosary Society, and was very active in the VFW Ladies Auxillary, Dunmore. She proudly served as a democratic committee woman in Scranton.
Lenore was a loving mother, who cared deeply for her children and their families. She was a wonderful parent, who provided a secure and loving home environment for her children to grow up within. She also welcomed all newcomers to her family, such as in-laws and grandchildren, with an open and loving heart. She loved to read the Scranton Times from cover to cover daily, to play board games, such as Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit, work crossword puzzles, watch Jeopardy, and occasionally visit the casino. Lenore was very interested in politics and enjoyed many news and talk programs on TV and radio.
Surviving are daughters, Mary Elizabeth Peropat and husband Robert, Allentown; Constance Gentile and husband Joseph, Dunmore; Nancy Gibbons and son-in-law, Michael, both of Scranton; a son, James and wife Sandi McPhee, Pittsburgh; grandchildren, Susan Savary Breidinger, Alexander Savary, Maria Gentile Dotter, Catherine Gentile Kurilla, Matthew Gentile, Wendy Gibbons Green, Michael Gibbons, Jr., Rachel Gibbons, Ashley Arena, Lauren Arena Novick and Kyle Arena; 9 great-grandchildren; a brother; Wilbur Setzer and wife Jean, Philadelphia; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Alexander Savary and a daughter-in-law, Susan Schirra Arena.
The funeral will be Monday from St. Clare’s Church, 2215 N. Washington Ave., Scranton with Mass at 10:00 a.m.
Friends may call from 9:00am until the time of Mass.
Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst Township.
