Josephine Marie Fiore Tesluk, 95, Dunmore, died Saturday at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore after a brief illness. She was the widow of John Tesluk, who died in 2003.
Born in Dunmore, March 19, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Enrico Nicholas and Carolina Maria Guadagno Fiore. Josephine was a first-generation American, her parents having immigrated from Abruzzo and Calitri, Italy, in the early 1900s.
Josephine graduated from Dunmore High School in 1941 and worked at WCDL, WICK, WPTS Italian Radio, WTVU 73 and WARM radio in the '40s, '50s and '60s. She spoke fluent Italian and was an organist, vocalist and announcer for the "Italian Hour" at WPTS followed by her appointment in 1958 as the only woman program director in Northeast Pennsylvania at that time. She was the on-air host of "Continental Capers," a variety program on WTVU 73 joined by the best of the area's top-flight talent on a musical trip to foreign capitals of the world. She was also retired from Acme Fast Freight.
Josephine served on many fundraising committees for churches and charitable organizations in the communities of Dunmore and Scranton. For many years, she was the organist and a choir member at St. Rocco's Church, Dunmore. She was also an accomplished pianist.
Josephine's nieces and nephews wish to thank the staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their kind and compassionate care of Aunt Jo during her short stay at their facility. Also, thank you to the staff of Dunmore Health Care Center.
Surviving are nieces and nephews who were her caregivers, Caroline Marie Walsh and husband, Edward J. Walsh; Lenore Fiore Mills; Enrico J. Fiore; Joe Tesluk; a great nephew, Fiore Mills; a great niece, Kristina Fiore; nieces and nephews of the Tesluk and Searfoss families.
She was also preceded in death by sisters, Sarah Marie Fiore and Gaetana Fiore; brothers, Leonard Fiore and his wife, Angela Laurie Fiore; Mario Onofrio Fiore; and a great-nephew, Jesse Mills.
The funeral will be Tuesday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith Street, Dunmore. Interment, Mount Carmel Cemetery, Dunmore.
Friends may call Tuesday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home.
