Joseph F. Longo, 87, of Dunmore died Friday morning at Hospice of the Sacred Heart inDunmore. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Carmella Gillette, who died April 30, 2005.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Frank and K. Lena Lamantia Longo, he was a graduate of West Scranton High School, and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish in Dunmore. Prior to retirement, Joe was employed by Affiliated Foods for over 38 years, and also for many years, together with his late wife, operated Carm’s Banner Food Store in Dunmore. His true joy was his grandchildren, working at his son’s business Jerry’s For All Seasons in Dunmore, cooking, and spending time at family gatherings. He was a member of the American Legion and the Teamsters Local #229, and was an avid sports fan, especially of Penn State football and the New York Yankees.
Surviving is his son, Jerry and wife Allison, and grandchildren Jerry Jr. and Gemma, all of Dunmore; a sister-in-law, Nancy Gillette, also of Dunmore; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers Edward and Richard Longo.
The funeral will be Monday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with mass at 11 a.m. in the St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith St., Dunmore. Interment in Dunmore Cemetery will be at the convenience of the family.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 4-7 p.m.
