In Loving Memory of John J. Valvano

John J. Valvano

John J. Valvano

Dunmore, PA September 12, 1926 ~ January 2, 2019 Date of Service: January 7, 2019

John J. Valvano, 92, a lifelong resident of Dunmore passed away peacefully Wednesday morning at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore.  He and his wife, the former Mary Ann Gallucci celebrated sixty-five (65) years of marriage on September 5th.

Born in Dunmore, he was the son of the late Vito Valvano and Lucia Ricciardi Valvano.  He was a lifelong member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish in Dunmore.  He was also a thirty year usher at the annual St. Ann’s Novena in Scranton.  Together with his brother Guy “Tony” Valvano, he dedicated the Blessed Mother Shrine and St. Ann Statue at St. Ann’s Monastery and Shrine Basilica in honor of his parents.

He graduated from Dunmore High School and at the age of 19 entered the U.S. Army where he honorably served his country during both World War II and the Korean War.  During his heroic and meritorious military service in combat zones, he was awarded the Medical Badge, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and two Purple Hearts.  Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Conrail/New Jersey Transit for over thirty years.  In honor of his brother who passed away in Hurricane Katrina, he proudly established the Guy T. Valvano Memorial Scholarship which is annually awarded to a nursing student in need of financial aid at the University of Scranton.  Of all of his accomplishments in life, none compared to his greatest treasure and joy which was the time spent with his grandchildren.

His family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Tom and Lori Carey, Dr. Salvatore Lawrence and staff member Julie, the caring and compassionate staff at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, and Patti Ephault.  Until the time of his passing, he could always be found helping and assisting others which was one of the hallmarks of his life.  He forever will be sadly missed by all of his family and friends.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by six sons, Vito G. Valvano, Dunmore; John J. Valvano and wife, Diane, Colorado; Anthony S. Valvano, Dunmore; Nicholas C. Valvano and wife, Claire, New Jersey; Paul D. Valvano and wife, Michelle, Dunmore; and Attorney Guy N. Valvano and wife, Kellie, Dunmore; grandchildren, James, Matthew, Brooke, Charles and Madolyn, and extended cherished family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his name to St. Ann’s Monastery and Basilica, SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish or to a charity of the donor’s choosing.

The funeral will be Monday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc. 318 East Drinker Street in Dunmore with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30AM in St. Anthony of Padua Church in Dunmore. Burial will follow the mass with military honors in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Dunmore.

Friends may call Sunday from 2pm-5pm

Johnny will be missed by everyone who knew him. He was one of the most selfless and hardworking people I have ever met! He was a dear friend of my father and my aunt, and he was always ready to jump in and lend a hand whenever he saw the opportunity.

What a wonderful man. I cherish my time spent on Burke St. visiting the Valvano family. My trips to St. Ann's were never complete without visiting the 'Valvano' statue. God bless Mr. V. and the entire Valvano family.

I am sad in the loss of such a good man. What greater legacy could a man have than having such honorable sons.
