Isadore "Izzy" Steckel, 99, a native of Dunmore, died Wednesday at Shady Side Hospital, Pittsburgh. His wife, the former Miriam Mandel, died March 9, 2013.

Born in Taylor, son of the late Jacob and Hannah Kruger Steckel, he was a graduate of Dunmore High School and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. For many years, he operated Steckel's Market on East Drinker Street, Dunmore, and had a street in the borough named in his family's honor.

He was a longtime devoted member of and current president of the Temple Israel congregation of Dunmore, which named its sanctuary in his honor. He was also a member of Temple Israel, Scranton, and served as a past commander of the Sandy Weisberger-Leon Kaplan Post 165, Jewish War Veterans.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be deeply missed.

Surviving are a daughter, Beth Zepel and husband, Dr. Richard, Greenville, S.C.; a son, Dr. Alan Steckel and wife, Fern, Pittsburgh; five grandchildren, Scott, Adam; and Michael Steckel and his wife, Cari; and Tara and Lindsay Zepel and her fiancé, Josh; and nieces and nephews. 

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Louis; and sisters, Clara Rosenfeld, Lillian Rubinfeld, Minnie Rosen and Sarah Feibus.

A funeral service will be held today at 3:30 p.m. in the Isadore Steckel Sanctuary of Temple Israel of Dunmore, 515 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, by Rabbi Moshe Saks. Interment in the Dalton Jewish Cemetery.
