Eugene G. “Gene” Kelly, 90, of Dunmore, died Friday evening at the Greenridge Health Care Center, Scranton. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, the former Margaret O’Boyle.

Born in Dunmore, he was the son of the late Frank and Lucy Moore Kelly and was a graduate of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel grade school and Dunmore High School. He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, Dunmore. He was a Marine Corps veteran and served during World War II fighting in the battles of Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima and was awarded a purple heart in the Iwo Jima Campaign.

Gene worked for the Borough of Dunmore as the wage tax collector until his retirement in 1991. He was an active member of St. Mary’s Holy Name Society serving as president, the VFW McHugh-Bushweller Post 3474, Dunmore serving as past commander and the Father’s Club of Bishop O’Hara High School’s past president. He also was a member of the notorious coffee club at the former Curry Donuts, Dunmore and was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. His personality and sense of humor will be fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.

Our family offers special thanks to all our family and friends who visited Gene over the past year and a half and special thanks to the outstanding care given by the staff at Greenridge Health Care Center and the Personal Home Health Hospice.

Also surviving are daughter; Sharon Kelly, Dunmore; Patti Kelly, Pittsburg and sons; Brother Frank Kelly FMS, Poughkeepsie, NY; Sean and wife Carol, Holidaysburg, Pa and Joseph and wife Denise, Orange Park, FL.  Grandchildren; Meghan Burkey and husband Seth; Lauren Acosta and husband Rafael; Patrick, Michael, Erin, Kathryn and Ryan Kelly. Great-grandchildren; Emmalyn, Olivia, Sofia and Mariana.

Several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Coleen and sisters; Katherine Butler and Delores Manley and brothers; Bill, Joe, Dick, Tom, Frank and Paul. Beloved dogs; Peppy, Donegal, Linda and Abbey.

The funeral will be Wednesday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore with Mass at 11:00am in St. Mary’s Church, Chestnut St., Dunmore.

Interment, St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery, Dunmore.

Friends may call Tuesday from 4-7pm

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 967 Griffin Pond Rd. South Abington Township, Pa 18411.

Dearest Brother Frank, I am so sorry to learn of the passing of your Dad. What a remarkable legacy. Prayers go out to you and your family as I know the heartache that you all feel. I will do a donation to Griffin Pond-love that place! Sorry I could not attend the viewing as it would have been wonderful to see you.

Aunt Peggy and Cousins, we were all saddened by the news of Uncle Gene's passing. I wish we could of spent more time together. Our love and prayers are with you.

Heartfelt and sincere sympathy to the family of Gene. I am Very Blessed to have been able to get to know Gene. I will Always remember him and have a special place in my heart for him. I truly looked forward to seeing him each morning he will be greatly missed. God Bless you and comfort you in your loss of a great man, faithful husband , wonderful loving Father, grandfather, master(dog dad ) , and friend. He is now ,commander of. The Angels......
