Elizabeth Swift Loughney, 104, died Saturday in the skilled nursing facility at Lima Estates in Lima, Pa. after a brief illness. Her husband, John Clifford Loughney died October 5, 1995.
Born in Dunmore, she was the daughter of the late John Edward and Catherine Stevens Swift.
She graduated in 1931 from Marywood College, Scranton and taught 8th grade in Dunmore’s public schools between 1931 and 1947. After moving in 1956 to Springfield, Delaware County, she taught 5th grade at St, Francis of Assisi Parish from 1957-1965. In 1995, she moved to Lima Estates, a retirement community near Media, Pa. She enjoyed reading fiction, watching television, visiting with family and friends, playing word games, following current events and maintaining a deep interest in her family.
Surviving is her son, John A. Loughney and his wife, Amy A. Oliver, Northampton, MA, along with numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and their children.
She was preceded in death by her siblings; Marie Josephine “Rhea”, Dr. Frank, Walter, Clare Jeffrey, Dr. Donald, Dr. John and Catherine.
A funeral Mass will be held Saturday at 11:00am in St. Mary’s Church, 322 Chestnut St., Dunmore.
Interment, St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dunmore.
