Edward R. "Scrappy" Gavin, 82, of Dunmore, died Sunday morning at Regional Hospital of Scranton. He is survived by his wife, the former Marie Naro. The couple celebrated 58 years of marriage on Sept. 7.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Vincent and Bridget Ford Gavin, he attended West Scranton High School and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Scranton. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

He was a member of the V.F.W. McHugh-Bushweller Post 3474, American Legion, San Cataldo Club, DIsabled American Veterans, and the former Eternal Friendship Club, all of Dunmore.

He was a true Irishman - kind, generous and a storyteller. He enjoyed telling jokes and making people laugh. He loved watching his grandchildren in their sporting events and other activities. He also enjoyed his trips to the casino and horse racing. He loved his wife and was very proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. 

Also surviving are a son, Edward Robert Jr. and wife, Linda, Jefferson Twp.; daughters, Linda Baldauff and husband, John; and Donna Burke and husband, James, all of Dunmore; grandchildren, Matthew and Erin Gavin; John Baldauff and wife, Alexis; Nicole Strauser and husband, Stefen; Nicholas and Michael Baldauff, and Max Burke; great-grandchildren, Elijah Gavin, Alivia and Gavin Strauser; a sister, Kathy Myers and husband, Jerry; brothers, Jack Gavin and wife, Joan; and Eugene Gavin and wife, Harriet; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also preceded in death by sisters, Dolores and Marie; and brothers, Vincent, Paul and Robert.

The funeral will be Thursday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Scranton. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.

Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

We are so sorry that Scrappy has passed. He was such a wonderful, fun-filled man! I don't believe I ever saw him without his customary smile, happy words and jokes. He was such a wonderful person - the world is going to be a bit colder without his warmth. Our condolences and prayers are with you.

Scrappy Jr.,
I'm so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. What a super guy. Living next door to him as a kid was something that I will always remember. Please forgive me for wont be able to pay my final respects for Scrappy Senior on Wed.
I'll be out of town but wanted to offer you my condolence's.

"Scrappy" I have not seen you in such a long time but I will never forget how nice you always were to me. I pray your family can find peace in the Lord and that you R.I.P. God Bless all of you.

My deepest sympathy to the Gavin family. Scrappy was a great man. He will be missed.
