In Loving Memory of Edward J. Mathewson
Edward J. MathewsonDunmore, PA November 9, 1931 ~ November 29, 2015 Date of Service: December 5, 2015
Edward James Mathewson, 84, of Dunmore, passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2015 at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center in Scranton. Born on November 9, 1931 in Moscow, Pa. to Albert and Alberta (Rasimas) Mathewson, he moved to Dunmore at a very early age. There, he met and married Mary (Evanko) Mathewson, raised six children, and resided until his passing. Ed and Mary graduated from Dunmore High School in 1949, where he was class president. They were married for 51 years upon her passing on May 28, 2006.
Ed was a proud Korean War era veteran of the United States Navy having served from 1949 to 1955, on active duty from 1952 to 1954. He was deeply patriotic; a properly lit United States flag still flies in his front yard. Ed was a printer by trade, having worked in Scranton, Rahway, N.J., Binghamton, N.Y., and East Stroudsburg, but held several different jobs to support his family through the years. He retired from Technographics in 1994 after 18 years as a warehouseman. After retirement, he and Mary traveled many times to Florida but their favorite trips were to Boston, usually with the family of at least one of their children, to watch their beloved Red Sox play and to see the sights. He was an ultimate do-it-yourselfer, firmly believing that you didn’t call a professional until you had “fixed” something beyond repair. He took great pride in maintaining his and Mary’s home to the highest standard.
Surviving are five children, William and wife, Margaret, Dallas, Pa.; Barbara McElroy and husband, William, Archbald; Mimi Cusick and husband, Col. Patrick, USAR, Scranton; Brian, Olyphant; and Edward Jr., Quakertown, ten grandchildren, William N. Mathewson Jr., Meg Mathewson, M.D., Adam and Jenna McElroy; Barry Mathewson and wife, Emily; Michele Mathewson, P.J. and Brian Cusick, Maura and Anna Mathewson; three great-grandchildren, Dylan and Tyler Mathewson, and Brooks Bolton; and a brother, Albert.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary, and their angel son, Barry, who God called home after just 11 months on this earth; a brother, Christy Mathewson; and a sister, Lucille LaPergola.
The funeral will be Saturday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 East Drinker Street in Dunmore, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Paul’s Church, Penn Avenue in Scranton. Interment with full military honors follow the Mass in St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow.
