As a self-taught guitar player, he was a member of the band Guys and Dolls and other locals bands over the years. He spent many hours and had a special bond with his grandson, Donald Jr., reminiscing about the numerous country music entertainers he had the pleasure of meeting, including Ernest Tubbs and Wanda Jackson, and had been invited to become a member of the band on the Merv Griffin Show.
