Arthur Z. "Buddy" Jurkowitz, 96, of Scranton, died Tuesday morning at the Jewish Home of Eastern Pa.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Benjamin and Millie Mittelman Jurkowitz, he attended the Wharton School of Finance. He was a World War II veteran having served as a staff sergeant in the Army Medical Corps with the 165th Station Hospital in the Philippine Islands.

He was a retired general insurance agent and broker with more than 25 years in the profession and served as a past president of the Lackawanna Insurance Agents Association for two years.

He was a member of the Jewish War Veterans, Sandy Weisberger-Leon Kaplan Post 165, for more than 50 years, having served as a past commander, and had held offices and served on numerous committees with the Jewish War Veterans both statewide and nationally. In 1997 he became a Legion of Honor member in the Chapel of Four Chaplains.

Buddy was a member of Temple Israel of Scranton, the Jewish Community Center, the American Legion and numerous other civic, religious and charitable organizations.

He enjoyed spending time with his immediate and extended family.

Surviving are his sister-in-law, Gloria Jurkowitz, of Scranton; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews,

He was also preceded in death by his brother, Monroe Jurkowitz; and sisters, Estelle Finkelstein and Mitzi Popkin.

The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with services by Rabbi Steven Nathan. Interment, Dalton Jewish Cemetery.
