Alfred G. Rice Jr., Waverly Twp., died Saturday in Regional Hospital of Scranton. He and his wife, the former Annette Moskovitz, celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on Aug. 26.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Alfred G. Sr. and Gertrude "Trude" Furman Rice. He was a graduate of Abington Heights High School, class of 1957, and received a B.S. in accounting in 1961 from Syracuse University School of Management. During his professional career, he served as a director of marketing and sales for several companies, including Alfred Rice and Son Inc./R.L. Fitzwater and Son Inc., Man, Levy and Nogi Inc. Insurance Co., the Russ Berrie Co., Argus Communications and Rustic Crafts Co. Inc.

Alfred was a member of Temple Hesed, and had served on its board of directors. He served as an Abington Twp. supervisor for 30 years, as well as a past president of the Abington Area Council of Government, and served on the Abington Twp. Municipal Authority. He was a former member of the Scranton Rotary Club, in addition to serving on the United Way of Lackawanna County Campaign and as a past president of the Waverly Community House.

He enjoyed skiing, golf and had marshalled at the Toshiba Sr. Golf Classic in Newport Beach, Calif.

Also surviving are children, A. Geoffrey Rice and wife, Mary, Manchester, Md.; Susan Rice and Dr. Daniel Coster, Scranton; and James Rice and wife, Dr. Ann Ullrich, Irvine, Calif.; grandsons, Adam, Zachary and Alex Rice; a sister, Jane Bennett and husband, Ross, Allen, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Donald Furman Rice.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at noon in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, by Rabbi Daniel Swartz. Interment in Temple Hesed Cemetery, Dunmore. The family will receive friends on Tuesday at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time service. Shiva will be observed at the family home, 110 Overlook Road, Waverly Twp., Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Dear Sue and family:

Sorry to read about the passing of your father, I will be out of town tomorrow or would be there to pay my respects. Your dad was one of the nicest men that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. My condolences to you and your family on his passing, I will remember him in my prayers.
