Betty A. Burke, formerly of 939 E. Drinker Street, Dunmore, passed away on April 24 at the home of her niece, Judy Burke Gress, Nicholson, PA. Betty was retired from the office of the Pennsylvania Auditor General, Scranton, PA.

Betty was the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Ann Joyce Burke. Her siblings Thomas J. Burke, James F. Burke, Mary M. Burke, and Ann Burke McLaughlin preceded her in death. Betty was the aunt of Judy Burke Gress, Nicholson; Thomas J. McLaughlin and wife, Karen, Dunmore; and Dr. Maureen McLaughlin, Scranton. Betty was also a grandmother to Beth Gress Watkins and husband Richard, Clarks Summit; Kevin M. Gress and wife Karen, Dunmore; and Michael J. Gress and wife Angie, Strafford, PA; Cristin A. McLaughlin, Dunmore; and Caitlin A. McLaughlin, Dunmore. Her great-grandchildren, Connor and Emma Watkins, were her greatest joy.

Throughout her life, Aunt Betty, as she was affectionately known to many of her nieces' and nephews' friends, was dedicated, fun-loving, and adventurous. She served as a volunteer at Mercy Hospital, was President of the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing Parents’ Association, and was active in the auxiliary of the Dunmore Knights of Columbus for many years. She was also politically active throughout her life.

Betty had wonderful friends who ranged from childhood classmates and Sport Hill neighbors, to career-related friends and professional colleagues, to relationships developed within the last year of her life. Betty also treasured pets throughout her life, particularly her dog, Mandy Burke.

Described by those who loved her as “the heart of the family,” Betty was surrounded by family throughout her life and particularly during the past year. She received wonderful, loving care from everyone, but most especially from her granddaughters, Cristin and Caitlin McLaughlin.

Throughout her life, Betty was devoted to her religion and particularly dedicated to St. Ann. Donations in Betty's honor may be made to St. Ann's Monastery, 1233 St. Ann’s Street, Scranton, PA 18504.

A funeral mass celebrating Betty’s life was held at the convenience of the family on Saturday, May 5, 2012, at St. Ann’s Monastery, Scranton.
