John R. Anderson, Jr.

John R. Anderson, Jr.

Scranton, PA May 2, 1937 ~ February 13, 2012 Date of Service: February 17, 2012

John R. Anderson, Jr., 74, Scranton, died peacefully Monday evening while surrounded by his loving wife and children in the VNA Hospice Unit at Geisinger-Community Medical Center in Scranton. He and his wife, the former Mary Frances Arndt would have celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary on February 26th.

Born in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late John R. and Eleanor Wolff Anderson, Sr. He was a graduate of South Catholic High School in South Scranton, had served in the U.S. Air Force, and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Scranton. Prior to retirement John had been employed for 40years by the Federal Aviation Administration. After retirement he had worked for several local trucking and delivery companies.

John was an avid sports enthusiast, which included being a member of the Bistocchi’s House League Bowling League for many years, but his greatest enjoyment came when coaching his children and grandchildren in various local youth sports. This was especially evident in the amount of time he dedicated to coaching and the Board of Directors for the East Scranton Little League. He had served as District 17/32 Little League Representative and had coached the 1979 East Scranton Little League All Star Team to the league’s only District 17 Championship. John’s dedication was honored in 2008 by naming the East Scranton Little League Field after him. He also served as the long time treasurer of the Central High School Football Parent’s Club.

John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle who lived for his children and grandchildren. He was always available to help with anything asked of him. He enjoyed his annual trip to Las Vegas and his occasional trips to Mohegan Sun Casino where he enjoyed watching the horse races. His family will miss his attendance at family gatherings and his grandchildren’s activities and events, more than words can express.

His family would like to thank Dr. Shripathi Holla, Dr. Kurt Moran, Dr. Lisa Thomas, Dr. Christopher Peters, and ICU nurses and staff at Geisinger-Community Medical Center, for the care and compassion shown to John.

Also surviving are a daughter, Cathy Carpenter and her husband Scott, Scranton, five sons, John R. Matty A,
We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Your dad was a wonderful man who taught you how to be a loving husband and great father! Those are traits that you will always possess. It's difficult to find words to help ease the pain of your loss. Just know that we are thinking of you all and praying for you during this difficult time. Our condolences go out to the entire Anderson family. God Bless.

I met John at work where in the beginning he was a great driver and employee. But he quickly became something more important - a great friend and all around wonderful person. Always willing to help and always with a smile. I'll miss having him pop in with his happy "Ay you". As much as I will miss him he will be missed by all that knew and loved him.
