Gertrude Miller

Lodi, NJ and formerly of Scranton March 1, 1924 ~ November 10, 2011 Date of Service: November 13, 2011

Gertrude "Gertie" Miller, 87, of Lodi, NJ passed away Thursday evening at Hackensack Medical Center. Her husband, the late Nathan Miller died in 1990.

Born in Scranton on March 1, 1924, to the late Isadore and Bessie Troy Freidlin, Gertie grew up in Scranton, attended Temple Israel and eventually graduated from Juilliard in 1944. The family spent summers together in their vacation cottage at Chapman Lake.

In 1945 Gertie married, and the two spent many years running a well-known variety/stationery store, first in Harlem, NY and later in Ridgefield Park, NJ. Together they had a daughter, Lisa. Gertie and Nate continued to operate their store on Main St.  In the evenings, Gertrude found time to direct the musicals at Teaneck High School for several years and direct the synagogue children's choir. She also performed with her guitar as Part of the Jewish Lecture Bureau and many functions and gatherings, including a concert in Central Park.  While living in Ridgefield Park, she was kept company by her dear friend and "adopted" daughter, Mary Scheffler.  After the death of her husband and the sale of Park Stationers, Gertie moved to Lodi.  Gertie, a member of Hadassah, enjoyed spending her time gardening, swimming and running an adult "Healthy Bones" class. She attended services at the Pine Brook Jewish Center and delighted in leading the family in her favorite Passover and Hanukkah melodies.   She passed away peacefully with her family by her side.

Surviving is her beloved daughter with whom she shared a special bond until the end, Lisa Miller and husband Tony Taylor, of Yonkers, NY; her nieces Sydie, Ricky, Ellen, Sandy, Marlene, Rene and Mary Joan and her nephews, Alan and Michael, as well as several great nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her siblings, William, Esther and Jerry.

The funeral will be Sunday at 1p.m. in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore with services by Rabbi Joseph Mendelsohn. Interment, Temple Israel Cemetery, Dunmore.

 There is no local shiva.
